November 2010 - Newsletter
What a brilliant start to this half term! The children are settled, happy and excited about being at Brantfield. Please don’t forget to read the class whiteboards and look in your child’s Special Book to find out about some of the many experiences they are enjoying.

Autumn fair
Thank you very much for all your help and support for our Autumn Fair. We raised an amazing £236 which will go towards the costs of events at the end of this term.

Sickness
We have recently had a bout of very unpleasant stomach upsets which have affected children. Please remember that, as tummy upsets can be passed round so quickly, the Health Authority state children need to be off school for 48 hours after the last episode of illness to prevent the likelihood of things spreading. Thank you for your co-operation in this matter.

Children In Need
Room 1 - Friday 19th November
Room 2 – Tuesday 16th and Friday 19th November

We will be raising funds for this worthy cause on Friday this week. Children are welcome to come dressed up or dressed in Pudsey’s yellow and red colours. We will collect donations for Children In Need in the classroom.

Visit to Kendal Library
Room 1 - Tuesday 23rd November
Room 2 Tuesday 23rd (afternoon) and Friday 26th November

We have arranged for our children to visit the library to find out about their ‘Book Start Treasure Boxes’, join in some activities and have a story with the librarian. The children will be given a voucher by the librarian which they can exchange at Brantfield for their Treasure Box. We would be grateful of help to walk down and back; there is a list to sign in the classroom if you are free.

Autumn gardening days
Room 1 - Friday 26th November
Room 2 Tuesday 30th and Thursday 2nd December

We will soon be busy sweeping leaves and preparing our garden for the winter. We invite you to stay for the nursery session to join us in the garden. Please let staff know if you are able to help and bring along extra brooms, wheelbarrows, rakes, shovels etc. if you have them, and of course your wellies! With your help we should be able to remove all the leaves and tidy our garden – we hope!

We will also have a Family Gardening Day on Sunday 5th December 11:00am - 2.00pm in case there are any final jobs for the winter. Everyone is welcome!

Morrisons ‘Let’s Grow’
Thanks for your support with these Morrisons vouchers. We collected an amazing 2310 vouchers – brilliant for a small school. We will get some child sized equipment for gardening and some fruit bushes and plants

Office vacancy
We have recently appointed Sue Carr to join and lead the BQC team using her existing excellent childcare skills – we will really miss her in the office but know she will be an excellent addition to BQC. This, of course, means that we now have a vacancy for someone to help with admin, greeting and general reception duties. If you know of anyone who might be interested in a very varied part time job please let us know.

September 2010 - A new year at Brantfield
A warm welcome to all our new children and families, the staff and I are looking forward to sharing a happy and successful year with you all. Throughout this year we hope to develop the partnership between us, involving you in your children’s learning through the learning stories, sharing their progress through their Special Books and celebrating their achievements.

The learning stories record our observations describing how your children are learning while they are busy with the many experiences we provide. We will keep the learning stories, other photos and pieces of work in the special books. We would like you to contribute to the special books with photos, entry tickets, postcards etc so we build up a full picture of your child and the things they enjoy learning and doing both at home and at Brantfield. You are welcome to look at your child’s special book with them and take them to share at home with your family but please return them quickly so your key carer to add more and children can enjoy looking at them with their friends. Your child’s key carer will look after their special book which will be kept in your child’s box in the hall or on the landing.

Please remember to check your child’s box file everyday for letters, messages about events and birthday invitations etc. Please will you also check the whiteboard by the classroom door for messages and daily information, thanks.

Times of sessions and lunch club
Morning children attend from 9-12.00 Monday to Friday. We run a small lunch club to extend the length of sessions by 30 minutes for children who attend during the mornings (12-12.30pm). Lunch Club costs £1.75 per day and is held in the classroom. Please ask Karen Bradbury if you would like your child to stay when they have settled in as the places are limited. Room 2 (upstairs) children attend either -

Monday group: 9-3.15pm Monday and Tuesday and 9-11.30am on Wednesday,

or

Friday group: 12.45-3.15pm Wednesday, 9-3.15pm Thursday and Friday.

Staffing at lunch time is now included in their free sessions.

Open parents evening, Wednesday 13th October 4:00pm - 6:00pm
You are welcome to drop in during this evening to meet with staff to talk about how your children have settled and have a good look around their classroom. I will give illustrated talks at 4.15 and 5.00pm in the Children’s Centre Room about how young children learn and how we support their learning. Children are welcome.

Great garden developments
Largely due to Sheila Hutton’s hard work there are many exciting new areas in our gardens and Sheila has more ideas! If you would like to help with these developments come and join us for a Family Gardening Day on Saturday 2nd October 11-2.00pm – bring your wellies and some tools. Another big thank you to Sheila for all her hard work.

Fruit for snacks and Birthdays
Please can I remind you that we are not included in the free ‘Fruit for Schools’ scheme and we would again be grateful if each week you could donate a piece of fruit for the children to share for their snack. Thank you in anticipation.

The ‘Birthday Fruits’ is a great way to celebrate the children’s birthdays. Each child chooses their favourite fruit which we buy to share with all the children on their birthday. This not only encourages children to try a range of fruits but also means that all children can be included (no risk of allergies to cake ingredients etc) and we continue with our and healthy school policy. Baking is another way that we hope to reinforce healthy eating.

Story sacks
Last year a group of Mums made us some fabulous new story sacks, you are welcome to borrow these story sacks to share with your child. Please sign them out and in as you borrow them and return them to the box by the photocopier in the office for checking. If anyone would like to help look after the story sacks or is willing to help with fundraising events like our Autumn Fair please let Karen Bradbury, Sue Carr or myself know. Thank you.

Children’s centre room
This room is being used by Sue and the Toddlers in the middle of the week and we will hold meetings and courses on Mondays or Fridays. Barnardo’s, who are managing the Children’s Centre Services for Kendal, will organise sessions on child development, how to help with children’s language development etc. If there are any courses or meetings you would be interested in attending, please let me know and we will try and arrange them. Kim Breaks will be running some Baby Massage sessions later in the year, we will let you know when. If you would like to have a ‘drop in’ coffee morning etc. and are willing to help organise this, please let me know.

You are welcome to leave buggies in our buggy park just inside the wooden shutter.

Voluntary Contribution
Please find a small brown envelope attached to this letter for voluntary school fund contributions for this term. This contribution is separate from our fund raising and is used to buy items connected with children’s day to day classroom activities. Your donations help to fund baking activities which the children enjoy on a weekly basis and contribute to the cost of printing the many photos which we use to share your child’s learning with you. All contributions are much appreciated.

Health care issues
During the autumn months ahead there will be the inevitable colds, viruses and common childhood illnesses passing around and if children are not well they are better off at home, whatever they may say! There is no quiet place in school for a sick child to rest. If your child has suffered from diarrhoea and/or vomiting the Health Protection Agency state that they should stay away from nursery for 48 hours after it has settled to prevent it spreading to other children and staff.

You may wish to begin regular checks of your child’s hair as in the past we have had recurrent cases of head lice. In the event of your child catching head lice would you please inform staff so we can be extra vigilant and prevent them spreading. We have some useful information from Health Visitors available so please let me know if you would like a copy.

Named spare clothes
Please could you ensure your child has a spare set of clothes & wellies along with their splash suit – they also need spare socks as the muddy puddles are always very tempting! It also really helps the children if you make sure their splashsuit is turned the right way round so they can put it on the following day. Please could you name everything as we have many Brantfield sweatshirts and pink is a very popular colour for clothes!

The staff and I work hard to consolidate all that makes Kendal Nursery so special and we will continue to provide, in our wonderful setting, the high quality nursery education and care that is associated with Brantfield.

Please remember you are always welcome to arrange meetings with staff to discuss your child’s progress.

Please don’t hesitate to see me if there is anything you wish to discuss.

With my best wishes,

Veronica Broyd

August 2010 - More time to play and learn
Kendal Nursery School has increased the length of the sessions for children receiving the Government funded nursery places. From September, children aged 3 and 4 now receive 15 hours a week free nursery education, giving them more time to play and learn at Brantfield.

Children attending morning sessions will stay at Brantfield from 9am until 12 noon and afternoon sessions are 12.45pm – 3.45pm. Children attending over 2½ days will no longer be required to pay for lunch club, as the extended time allocation means that this is provided under the new Government scheme.

Veronica Broyd, Headteacher said “This is a great initiative, enabling us to provide more care for children and more support for local parents.”

July 2010 - Budding young gardeners at Brantfield
Children at Brantfield have been planting, tending and watching plants grow in their new garden and allotment areas. With the support of Sheila Hatton and Brantfield staff and families, children have established areas for flowering plants and fruit and vegetables. Funding for the plants came from Blue Peters ‘Seed Bid’ grant and as a result children have been able to plant, tend and enjoy the fruits of their labour. Beautiful flowers have been the inspiration for art work and vegetables will be enthusiastically used for baking in the autumn.

As our allotment becomes more established children will be able to plant, cook and then eat a range of fruit and vegetables and discover that supermarkets are not the only source of strawberries and pumpkins. Staff hope that these experiences will not only create an interest in gardening but also encourage children to develop a taste for fresh fruit and vegetables.

To celebrate these developments we invited Chris Crowder (a former gardener for Blue Peter) to plant a conference pear tree – of course with the help of our budding gardeners!

June 2010 - Grotto area on the drive
We recently installed a special area at the end of the drive to ensure children’s safety as they leave Brantfield. Dave Bradbury used children’s ideas as the basis of this grotto – vines for children to ‘hide’ inside and wait for parents, it will be beautiful on dark mornings and evenings.
