Ofsted DEC 2008

Skilful leadership and clear vision by the headteacher, along with the dedication of the staff, has created a homely atmosphere where learning is highly infectious. Everyone in the school is extremely safety conscious but not at the expense of promoting confidence and a sense of adventure among children.

Context
Kendal Nursery School, Brantfield is in an elevated position overlooking the town and serves not only the town but also communities from the surrounding area.
Brantfield is 104 place nursery school sited in a Victorian house with classrooms on the ground and first floors with children attending on a part time basis. The house setting provides a homely environment for childrens first experience of the school situation and is surrounded by well developed gardens which are used on a daily basis.
Children can access their weekly 12.5 hours free entitlement by attending during mornings, afternoons or for 2.5 days.

The basic staff team consists of 3 qualified Teachers and 3 Teaching Assistants. Each class group is taught by a teacher and a teaching assistant with the additional staff enabling simultaneous access to the garden. The staff are all well qualified committed early years specialists with great knowledge of child development and experience of supporting children with a variety of additional needs. We also have 5 committed and hard working staff in our Brantfield Quality Care team. All staff in Brantfield work closely together especially in our amazing garden.
Kendal Nursery School was established in 1946 and celebrated its diamond jubilee in 2006.

Quality Education and Care.
A national longitudinal DFES study into children’s intellectual and social development found that:
  • the quality of the provision is directly related to better children’s development and that the quality was higher in nursery schools and nursery classes.
  • settings which have trained teachers show higher quality and their children make more progress.
  • children tend to make better intellectual progress in nursery schools.
  • EPPE research, March 2003, Kathy Sylva et al.

This quality was confirmed by our Ofsted inspection: “This is a good school, where the high quality dedication and care of staff leads to outstanding personal development and well-being of the children. Parents understandably hold the school and staff in the highest esteem, and feel that the ‘Brantfield experience’ is ‘first class’.” (December ‘08)
